The Effects of Class Size on Student Success as Determined by Course Completion and Course Pass Rate
Jeff D. Borden
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Argosy University, Denver
Class size has been widely studied in Higher Education with regard to faculty workload. Online class size research has heightened this conversation / debate. However, little class size research has tried to find a connection to student success, other than in primary education, with no studies performed as of yet for online learning. Most educators seem to buy into assumptions about small class sizes and student success. This research study analyzed 9,855 community college students for online class size and success, as defined by course completion and pass rate. From this research, success appeared to correlate with large class sizes more than small or medium sized classes. Possible reasons for this correlation are suggested and future study recommendations are given. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
