At the Crossroads of Language Variation: Urban College Students Learn about Sociolinguistics
Levinson, Kenneth
Teaching English in the Two-Year College, v33 n2 p198-210 Dec 2005
Learning about how language works not only gives students a better grounding in English; it also provides insights into the nature of what it means to be human. Language is both universal and a key element of human diversity. In becoming schooled in linguistic aspects of diversity, students become aware of their own language choices and the possibilities of expanding those choices, opening the door to interactions with different communities socially, academically, and professionally. In this article, the author discusses Language in the Multicultural Setting, a linguistics course that offers students the fundamentals of linguistics in the context of a survey of sociolinguistics. The author also describes some of the course topics like child language development, gender and language, and bilingualism, among other things, and include examples of student writing from both native and nonnative developmental writers in addition to student writing from those who did not require developmental courses.
