Why Yell When You Can Talk?: How to Keep Union Meetings Civil and Productive

For many community college executives, working with professional unions is part of the responsibility of leading an institution of higher learning. Relationships with unions can range from productive and civil to contentious and hostile. College officials must aim to strike a balance between maintaining decorum and fostering strong ties with unions while keeping the college's best interests at heart. The stakes are high. An adversarial relationship with professional services unions is a potential nightmare for administrators, particularly when it comes to divisive issues such as salary negotiations and reform. This article offers ten tips from college leaders on how to build better relationships with unions.
