Eliminate Whining in the Workplace: Moving beyond "Grin and Bear It"
Bruno, Holly Elissa
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n200 p93-96 Jul-Aug 2011
For early childhood professionals, both peers and supervisors, confronting adult whining or any other offensive behavior can be difficult. Eighty percent of early childhood leaders prefer to avoid conflict and hope the problem will just go away (Bruno, 2008). One sees herself/himself more as a nurturing professional than feisty warrior. The author has learned that telling a whiner, "Since I can't help you with that problem, please don't bring it to me again" is an act of compassion. In 12-step programs, this kind of compassion is called "tough love." When one sees a whiner coming one's way, he/she should consider his/her options: (1) Do you want to listen?; (2) Do you want to help her face her problem?; (3) Do you want to refer her to someone who can help?; (4) Or do you want to take a stand and say, "Since I can't help you with that problem, please don't bring it to me again."
