Using Computer Assisted Instruction To Raise and Predict Achievement in Chapter I Students.
Hotard, Stephen R.; Cortez, Marion J.
Computer-assisted instruction together with remedial reading classrooms for reading and regular classrooms for math has produced significant remedial gains in Chapter I students in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana--gains which are above the national average for Chapter I. The computer provides a vehicle for daily drill at each child's level which adds significantly to standard classroom remediation. Four years of consistent gains in grades 5 to 8 have shown that it is possible to predict future gains for similar populations. The computer level gains have been validated by correlating them with the Science Research Associates (SRA) nationally standardized scores. Further validation of the domain of acquired skills produced on the computer was performed by demonstrating that students could solve math and reading comprehension problems in an independently derived curriculum, Assurance, Inc. of Tucson, Arizona. Time spent on computer assisted instruction is directly related to increased remedial progress. When insufficient time is devoted to daily computer drill, progress is significantly diminished.
