IEP Workboxes: An Intervention for Increasing the Cognitive Development of Preschool Students with Disabilities

Intervention in School and Clinic, v46 n4 p251-256 Mar 2011
As a result of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA; 1990), public school districts are required to provide appropriate services to preschool students who are at risk or who are experiencing developmental delays. These services are frequently offered in preschool programs for children with disabilities (PPCDs). PPCDs are generally composed of classes that offer individualized interventions to small groups of 3- to 5-year-old preschool students who are at risk for or who are experiencing developmental delays. This article describes a teacher-friendly intervention strategy, individualized education program (IEP) workboxes, which was designed and implemented in a PPCD. This method is recommended to teachers who face the challenge of educating diverse students with disabilities in PPCD classes, who function on vastly different cognitive levels. While many students with learning disabilities experience slower rates of learning, focused instruction on the IEP workbox can help target specific skills that result in an increase in the rate and level of academic achievement.
