Looping for Long-Term Success
Coash, Vicki; Watkins, Karen
National Middle School Association (NJ3), Middle Ground v9 n2 p16-18 Oct 2005
At Santa Maria Middle School in southwest Phoenix, Arizona, teachers have decided to maintain their relationships with their students by looping through sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Here, they describe the results of the first three years of the program, discussing the development of their team's priorities and the strategies they embraced to make it work: (1) Home Court, a lesson in which students learn to view the classroom as a place of comfort and support--a concept that is carried throughout the three years of middle school; (2) team-building activities at least three days a week; (3) the Yet Lab, a place for students to stay after school without stigma; (4) individual contracts containing behavioral goals; (5) student-led conferences; and (6) a policy of social promotion for underperforming sixth graders, contingent on parents' and students' willingness to be proactive members of the team. Having tracked their "loopers" through high school, teachers at Santa Maria believe that the connections created through looping are continuing to have a strong positive impact.
