Completion Rates for Hispanic Students Enrolled in Hispanic-Serving Institutions Operating in Large, Urban Community College Districts
Burks, Mark C.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Texas A&M University - Commerce
The problem of this study was an examination of completion and graduation rates, especially in 2-year Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs) located in large urban areas. Additionally, the researcher analyzed the relationship between completion rates for Hispanic male and female students attending these institutions. The purpose of this study was to calculate the completion rates for Hispanic students who enrolled in a large urban 2-year HSI. Specifically, the researcher compared and contrasted the completion rates for Hispanic cohort students who completed degrees or certificates in 3 multicollege districts located in Arizona, California, and Texas. The researcher used data collected from archived institutional information available from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). The proposed data were analyzed using descriptive statistical procedures. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to obtain descriptive statistics to answer the research questions and to test the hypotheses. The results from this study showed differences in the completion rates for Hispanic cohort students among the 3 community colleges included in this study. From 2001-2015, Kvetko College had the highest overall cohort completion rates and the highest completion rates for Hispanic female cohort students. Forbes Community College had the highest completion rates for Hispanic male cohort students from 2001-2015. A visual representation of the completion-rate data indicated that the overall completion rate of Hispanic students, Hispanic male students, and Hispanic female students in large, urban 2-year colleges had not maintained a steady increase from 2001 to 2015.
