The Use of Peer Groups in Assisting Freshmen Students Adjust to University.
Williams, Clive
This study centers on the difficulties experienced by many students in making the transition from secondary school to university. The experimental program involved assigning incoming freshmen to small groups led by upperclass honors students. The groups met at least once weekly, with the senior student acting as resource person to encourage the new students and share their concerns. The upperclass students, in turn, met with university counselors and staff to receive support and advice. Various personality and adjustment tests were used to measure freshman attitudes. Although some methodological problems existed, it was found that the freshmen who participated in the groups were significantly higher on many of the measures of adjustment than those who did not.
