ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State University, Los Angeles
This study aimed to explore and analyze the experiences and perceptions of K-12 public school principals who served predominately Latinx students in southern California as technology leaders during the COVID-19 global pandemic. The research sought to investigate school principals' awareness, beliefs, and attitudes as school community technology leaders as outlined in the California Professional Standards for Educational Leaders and International Society for Technology in Education Standards. The research focused on theoretical replication to provide vivid detail and understand the potential impact of technology leadership in education. The mixed-methods case study consisted of surveys; semistructured interviews with three principals at the elementary, middle, and high school level; and artifacts review. Four main themes emerged from the data. The first theme, technology journey, explored school leaders' experiences in their roles as technology leaders and preparedness for digital learning. The second theme, influence and impact, explored attitudes and perceptions of technology implementation. The third theme, bridging the divide, explored the participants' actions in bridging the digital divide and making equity actionable. The fourth theme, innovation challenges, explored school community technology implementation challenges. Three significant findings emerged in this study: (a) the data supported the idea of technology determinist school leaders, (b) data and findings suggested school leaders have a direct influence and impact on creating a technology-focused shared vision and developing sociopolitical consciousness, and (c) school leaders have the moral agency and ethical decision-making skills to drive social change and innovation within the fabric of school culture and bridge the digital divide.
