ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Azusa Pacific University
The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify the perceptions of superintendents as to how prepared and supported they were to successfully lead an organization through crisis situations. A phenomenological approach was used and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 current or retired public school superintendents from diverse districts in the greater Southern California region. This study identified four emergent themes as it relates to perceptions of superintendents as to how prepared and supported they were to successfully lead through crisis situations. The themes include: (1) The importance of experience in prior positions; (2) The importance of professional superintendent organizations; (3) The importance of mentors, colleagues, and cabinet members; and (4) The importance of vulnerability and humility. The results of this study can be used to influence the design of administrative credential and doctoral programs in their preparation of future superintendents. Further, results from this study can also encourage the provision of systematic support systems for all superintendents.
