Measuring Readiness for Kindergarten Using the Desired Results Developmental Profile
Kriener-Althen, Kerry; Newton, Emily K.; Draney, Karen; Mangione, Peter L.
Early Education and Development, v31 n5 p739-763 2020
Research Findings: The Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) provides formative assessment of five domains of learning and development that are essential for school success. The current study provides an approach for establishing thresholds of readiness using the DRDP in relation to California's early learning expectations. DRDP data collected for 84,236 California 5-year-olds who were nearing the completion of preschool in 2017 were analyzed in relation to these thresholds. Results are reported for children completing state-supported programs who were likely to enter kindergarten the following fall, in relation to the social and emotional learning expectations of kindergarten. Practice or Policy: Many children enter school underprepared for the social and academic demands of kindergarten. Until recently, California, like many states, lacked information about the kindergarten readiness of children enrolled in state-supported preschool programs. Four levels of readiness ("emerging into," "nearing," "reaching," and "moving beyond"), rather than a single marker of readiness, applied to the state's existing early learning assessment, the DRDP, provide the state with information that may help close the opportunity gap for vulnerable populations, including children of color, dual language learners, and children from families with low incomes.
