Until recently, architects and school board trustees have been absorbed with the first order effects of science and technology -- i.e., the buildings produced. The side effects that have been ignored must now receive higher priority. Architects and engineers have tried to solve some technical problems by designing and constructing windowless or partly windowless public buildings. Although relatively satisfactory for adults, such a synthetic environment falls short of satisfying the psychological and physiological needs of young people. Windowless schools, for example, go contrary to the educational philosophy that the natural environment should be utilized in the education of young people. Research findings are cited, and the recommendation is made that each school design be studied by a multidisciplinary committee to assure provision of optimum human conditions. (Author)
