Intractable Issues: The Impact of the AICAD Post-Graduate Teaching Fellowship on Art and Design Education
Rachel Berger1; Juan Carlos Rodriguez Rivera2
Studies in Art Education: A Journal of Issues and Research in Art Education, v66 n1 p78-93 2025
The Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) is a consortium of 37 art and design schools in the United States and Canada. In 2015, AICAD established a postgraduate teaching fellowship to increase the racial and ethnic diversity of AICAD faculty. The fellowship has successfully created an onramp into art and design academia for candidates from underrepresented groups, but interviews with fellows reveal the gaps that remain. Art and design colleges must build new structures and support systems to bring about sustained cultural change and become spaces where diverse faculty can thrive.
