Needs Assessment of Florida Caregivers of Children with Dyslexia
Janna Traci Salari
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Florida
Within the last five years, more than two-thirds of the United States have passed state laws specific to dyslexia, yet there is very limited empirical research that investigates the voices of parents and/or caregivers (Woodcock, 2020). While the science of reading is at the forefront of conversation in education and legislation in Florida and nationwide, there have been few studies of any kind that investigate parental perspectives and parent partnerships in relation to dyslexia (Griffiths et al., 2004). The purpose of this study was to uncover the wants and needs of caregivers of children with dyslexia living in Florida. An online needs assessment survey was distributed primarily via social media and electronic mail. Descriptive statistics were utilized to analyze findings. These findings include but are not limited to significant caregiver isolation, stress, desire for support from the educational community, and pervasive visual perception misconception as the root cause. Results are intended to inform further research and caregiver opportunities. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
