My Journey with Toxoplasmosis
Winter-Messiers, Mary Ann
Exceptional Parent, v36 n10 p40-41 Oct 2006
The author describes her fears and struggles as she came to terms, as an American expatriate in France, with a medical diagnosis of Toxoplasmosis. This condition led to her birthing a son with Asperger's Syndrome. She tells of plunging herself into research to learn more about Toxoplasmosis, the number of things that could be seriously wrong with her baby, and her doctor's advising her to consider abortion, which she rejected. Phone conversations with spiritual mentors reminded her that others were helping her bear the weight and the counsel of world-renowned French Toxoplasmosis experts helped her focus and feel less alone in this new world.
