Euneeda Patrice Ellison
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Students with disabilities face challenges with low parental engagement and low student achievement in a rural Georgia school district. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine educators' perceptions of parental engagement and student achievement for students with special needs. The problem addressed the low parental engagement and student achievement for students with special education needs in a rural Georgia school district. The case study consisted of a semi-structured interview and a survey. Purposive sampling was used to select the participants for the study. Letters of invitation were emailed to 11 special education teachers to invite them to complete a semi-structured interview and a survey. Data was collected from a sample size of 10 special education teachers who consented to complete the survey via Qualtrics and six teachers who consented to complete the semi-structured interview via Zoom audio. I analyzed, transcribed, and coded all data manually. Member checking was completed by sending all participants a transcribed copy of the interviews and having the participants verify the transcription to ensure the validity of the data. Thematic coding was utilized to identify themes and code the data. The Epstein framework was the theoretical framework used to guide the research study. The research findings were categorized and coded using the three research questions. These findings revealed educators perceived parenting and parental engagement had a significant impact on student achievement and student performance levels. Recommendations for further research were to conduct an in-depth study to address parental engagement throughout a child's educational career. Another recommendation was to conduct a similar study using a quantitative or mixed-method case study. In addition, recommendations for further study were suggested to ensure all stakeholders support the educational goals of students with special needs and utilize resources to enhance parental engagement.
