The 8 Keys' Utility for Student Veterans' Pursuit of Associate Degrees

The purpose of the qualitative exploratory case study is to examine student veterans' perceptions of the utility of the 8 Keys to Veterans' Success (8 Keys) during their pursuit of associate degrees from a community college in Georgia, post-military service. The study explored the student veteran perspective by answering three research questions: (1) How do student veterans perceive the utility of the 8 Keys for pursuing higher education post-military service? (2) How do student veterans perceive the use of the 8 Keys by a community college in Georgia? (3) What is the student veteran perception about most and least beneficial of the 8 Keys to Veterans' Success towards associate degree completion? The study sample was comprised student veterans that graduate from a Georgia community college that affirmed their support to the 8 Keys and Vacchi's model of student veteran support was the theoretical foundation. Data were collected from a questionnaire, interviews, and focus groups. The questionnaire was completed by 16 student veterans, eight were interviewed, six participated in focus groups, and six agreed to follow up interviews. Data were analyzed using in six phases utilizing the thematic approach following Braun and Clark's model. The study results were student veteran perceive the 8 Keys as having a potential positive influence on higher education success but they did not influence their success, Georgia community colleges are doing poor job of implementing the keys, and Keys 2, 3, and 7 are the most beneficial to success but the keys need refinement to increase their utility. Recommendations for future research are presented and the research finding contribute to existing literature.
