Anti-Israelism, Social Media and the College Campus in the Aftermath of October 7: The Case of Columbia
Journal of Jewish Education, v91 n2 p158-178 2025
After the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, incidents categorized as antisemitic and anti-Zionist surged in the U.S. especially on college campuses. This paper focuses on the sense of belonging felt by Israeli students at Columbia University, home to the largest Israel-born student population in the Ivy League, as a result of this activism. Through an analysis of social media posts and survey responses, this article argues that scholars need to expand beyond the terms of "antisemitism" and "anti-Zionism" to include "anti-Israelism" in order to understand what unfolded on college campuses in the months following October 7.
