Studied the validity of the Bem Sex Role Inventory (S. Bem, 1974) (BSRI) in Japanese culture by asking 289 college students to rate the social desirability of BSRI items for both men and women. Overall, results indicate that the BSRI is a valid measure for use in Japanese culture. (SLD)

Examines the validity of the Strange Situation procedure for Japanese mothers and infants by examining correlates and antecedents of Strange Situation behavior for 60 infants and their mothers. Results suggest that the Strange Situation may not be a valid index of the security of infant-mother attachment in Japan. (SLD)

Validity of auto-stereotypes and heterostereotypes of Japanese and Americans is reflected in the rank-order correlations of "own" and "other" judgments for 110 Japanese and 169 U.S. undergraduate students and is found to be a function of the similarity of the 2 cultures when reacting to an episode.
