Weiland, Ricarda F.; Polderman, Tinca J. C.; Smit, Dirk J. A.; Begeer, Sander; Van der Burg, Erik – Autism: The International Journal of Research and Practice, 2023
To facilitate multisensory processing, the brain binds multisensory information when presented within a certain maximum time lag (temporal binding window). In addition, and in audiovisual perception specifically, the brain adapts rapidly to asynchronies within a single trial and shifts the point of subjective simultaneity. Both processes, temporal…

Huijser, Stefan; Taatgen, Niels A.; van Vugt, Marieke K. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2021
Preparing for the future during ongoing activities is an essential skill. Yet it is currently unclear to what extent we can prepare for the future in parallel with another task. In two experiments, we investigated how characteristics of a present task influenced whether and when participants prepared for the future, as well as its usefulness. We…

Bouwmeester, Samantha; Verkoeijen, Peter P. J. L. – Cognition and Instruction, 2012
Children's estimation patterns on a number line estimation task may provide information about the mental representation of the magnitude of numbers. Siegler and his colleagues concluded that children's mental representations shift from a logarithmic-ruler representation to a linear-ruler representation. However, there are important methodological…

Davidse, N. J.; De Jong, M. T.; Bus, A. G. – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 2014
How can it be explained that early literacy and numeracy share variance? We specifically tested whether the correlation between four early literacy skills (rhyming, letter knowledge, emergent writing, and orthographic knowledge) and simple sums (non-symbolic and story condition) reduced after taking into account preschool attention control,…

Kroesbergen, Evelyn H.; Van Luit, Johannes E. H.; Naglieri, Jack A.; Taddei, Stefano; Franchi, Elena – Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, 2010
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between early mathematical skills and cognitive processing abilities for two samples of children in Italy (N = 40) and the Netherlands (N = 59) who completed both a cognitive test that measures Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, and Successive (PASS) processing and an early mathematical…

Peer reviewedSmitsman, A. W. – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 1982
Results demonstrate that number can be abstracted from an array of elements in estimating. Estimation appears to be based on the perception of a higher order structure, and persons of 8 years and older are able to abstract the structure from an array of objects. Even 6-year-old children can be trained to estimate by abstracting number. (Author/RH)

Peer reviewedPollmann, Thijs; Jansen, Carel – Cognition, 1996
Analyzed construction of approximative expressions with two numerals in Dutch. Found that choice of number words was not arbitrary and that various kinds of factors are involved. Results suggest that analogue magnitude code is used in estimating and comparing, and human cognition seems to be able to perform simple calculations with quantities,…

Peer reviewedKingma, J.; Roelinga, U. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
Children completed three types of equivalent cardination tasks which assessed the influence of different stimulus configurations (linear, linear-nonlinear, and nonlinear), and density of object spacing. Prior results reported by Siegel, Brainerd, and Gelman and Gallistel were not replicated. Implications for understanding cardination concept…

Peer reviewedBeishuizen, Meindert – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1993
Describes a program in second-grade Dutch mathematics classes that emphasizes mental addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers up to 100. Deals with a strategy of counting by 10s from any number. (Contains 56 references.) (RLB)

Pateman, Neil A., Ed; Dougherty, Barbara J., Ed.; Zilliox, Joseph T., Ed. – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2003
This volume of the 27th International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education Conference includes the following research reports: (1) Improving Decimal Number Conception by Transfer from Fractions to Decimals (Irita Peled and Juhaina Awawdy Shahbari); (2) The Development of Student Teachers' Efficacy Beliefs in Mathematics during…
