Shattered Lives: A Portrait of New York's Children.
Erickson, Anne; And Others
A profile of child welfare in the State of New York is presented in this booklet, which includes many documentary photographs and statistics drawn from a variety of sources. General facts about population size and income levels are provided, as well as data on children's health care, hunger, and nutrition; juvenile justice; children alone and at risk; and homelessness. Two statewide organizations for child welfare, the Children's Collaborative and Statewide Youth Advocacy, Inc., are also briefly discussed. One in four New Yorkers is under 18, and 26 percent of them are classified as poor. One of every two Black and one of every three Hispanic children are poor, but 43 percent of New York's poor children are White. Statistically, poor children are more likely to come from broken families, and more likely to receive inadequate education and health and child service. One out of every three New York State students fails to complete high school, and New York schools are among the most racially segregated in the nation. This bleak picture is growing worse, and yet assistance programs remain inadequate for meeting the needs of the State's children. Information on membership in the Children's Collaborative is supplied and readers are urged to join and to become active advocates for children in need. (KH)
