Sense of Belonging among Adult Community College Women: An Exploratory Study in Southeastern North Carolina
Gilmore, W. Tamikka
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wingate University
This mixed method study offered an examination of the construct of sense of belonging among adult, community college women in the community college setting and its role on student success. Using academic data from women who met the criteria for the study at the conclusion of Fall 2016, results showed that neither group of women (Non-Minority/Privileged and Minority/Minoritized) students differed statistically among 25 sub-set variables that measured sense of belonging. However, both groups measured significantly higher among measures that assessed student/faculty relationships versus student/peer relationships. The structured interviews added rich data to the lived experience of women. Recommendations for the institution are included.
