A Reflection on Philosophy of Music Education Scholarship: Publications, Internationalization, Gatekeeping, and "Gap-Keeping"
Hanne Rinholm; Øivind Varkøy
Philosophy of Music Education Review, v33 n1 p74-90 2025
In this essay, we argue that both critique and self-criticism are needed to advance, professionalize, and internationalize the field of music education. We identify three "gaps" in the field: the gap between scholarly work and practice, the gap between North American and Northern European interpretations of foundational concepts, and the distinct differences between the political systems of these two regions. These gaps create tensions that affect the discourse in the international community. A question that inevitably arises is whether everyone in this community necessarily must be left-leaning or activists. We argue that Chantal Mouffe's ideas on agonistic cultures (a model of politics that emphasizes the acknowledgement of diverse perspectives) and Hans Skjervheim's ideas on triangular relations serve as ideals for scholarly dialogue, involving gatekeeping as a necessary feature of academic discourse. Accordingly, we assert that a certain degree of "gap-keeping" be maintained to preserve the diversity of perspectives, as well as to foster collaboration and exchange of ideas across the gaps. This will contribute to the growth of music education as a global discipline.
