Interdisciplinary Guide to Career Exploration.
Lewis, Jean; And Others
Designed as a component of a pilot career exploration program at Vale Middle School, Vale, Oregon, this interdisciplinary guide provides a model for teachers at the junior high and middle school level to use in relating all areas of the school curriculum to the four life roles advocated by the concept of career education (to become a responsible family member, and a responsible citizen, to use leisure time wisely, and to perform adequately in economic matters). The guide is organized by goals, curricular areas, and suggested activities. Goals identify a composite of statements intended to give substance to the broad areas of career exploration and provide a set of general guidelines for an interdisciplinary approach. Ten major areas used as curricular models for an interdisciplinary program are science, math, social studies, language arts, occupational activities, consumer education/homemaking, speech and drama, art, health and physical education, and music. Preceding each curricular area is an exploratory cluster chart which is divided into three sections to identify the curricular area, broad areas or units that the curricular area may be divided into for occupational exploration, and names of jobs and/or occupations suggested for study. Following the exploratory cluster chart in each section are several models of activities, each including a concept, suggested careers and/or occupations related to the concept, and several suggestions on how to apply the concept. A separate section contains other suggested activities for students and teachers not applicable to any specific subject area. (TA)
