Experiences of Higher Education Title IX Coordinators through the Lens of Occupational Burnout
Jessica Moran Buckridge
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Joseph's University
This mixed-methods research examined the experiences of occupational burnout among Title IX coordinators at higher education institutions in Pennsylvania as measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and by open-ended interviews with a subset of the Inventory respondents. Statistical analysis (35% response rate) indicated that Title IX coordinators in this study experienced burnout at varied rates, with the sample scoring as high or higher than normed samples in similar professional roles. Thirty percent of the sample scored in the high range of the emotional exhaustion scale. In-group analysis indicated that women, Title IX coordinators in a dedicated role, and coordinators with less Title IX experience scored higher on the MBI scales, suggesting that these populations may be more at-risk for developing burnout symptoms. Qualitative interviews with seven participants produced several themes regarding factors that may contribute to burnout in Title IX coordinators, including (a) emotional impact of work, (b) misunderstood roles, (c) volume of work, and (d) threat of litigation. Additionally, several protective factors emerged that may assist Title IX coordinators in insulating themselves from burnout, including (a) having a strong sense of purpose, (b) receiving institutional recognition, (c) support of independent role, (d) high ethical functioning, (e) confidence in process, (f) strong professional relationships, and (g) prior professional experiences. Recommendations for theory and practice are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
