Special Education Teachers' Perceptions of Using Picture Exchange Communication System in Teaching Children with Autism in Saudi Arabia

This study investigated the existing practices employed by special education teachers in Saudi Arabia regarding the application of PECS when teaching children with autism. One hundred eighteen respondents took part in the research study, and the results revealed special education teachers shared a common perception concerning the barriers in using PECS in teaching children with autism in Saudi Arabia. The research results indicated the special education teachers' practices to overcome the barriers in PECS utilization in teaching children with autism. The research study outcomes indicated there were significant differences at the 0.05 level of significance about the special education teachers' interest in the utilization of the PECS in teaching children with autism subject to gender, which favored females. However, there were no significant differences concerning the special education teachers' interest in the utilization of PECS in teaching children with autism subject to education qualification or years of teaching experience. The research study results indicated there were no significant differences in the research study respondents' responses to the special education teachers' barriers in the utilization of PECS in teaching children with autism subject to gender, education qualification, or years of teaching experience. Furthermore, the research study results indicated there were no differences in the responses provided by the research study participants to the practices to overcome the special education teachers' barriers in utilizing PECS in teaching children with autism subject to gender and years of teaching experience. However, there were significant differences pertaining to the practices to overcome the special education teachers in the use of PECS in teaching children with autism subject to education qualification that favored research participants with a bachelor's degree.
