Psychometric Properties and Validation of the GADA Scale for Measurement of Gender Awareness Degree in Adolescents
Electronic Journal of Research in Educational Psychology, v22 n64 p727-752 2024
Introduction: There are numerous instruments for the measurement of gender awareness. However, there are relatively few validated instruments with a broad overarching holistic vision of gender that do not approach the issue from an adult perspective. For this reason, this study puts forward validated scale for measurement of Gender Awareness Degree in Adolescents (GADAS). Method: The GADAS is the outcome of a pilot project and an expert opinion process. It has been validated by factor analysis in line with recent developments in statistical techniques in post-Little Jiffy social science psychometrics. The FACTOR program generated two factors, the personal and the social, with a constructionist gender perspective. The population from which the sample was drawn is students attending ten secondary schools in Cordoba, Spain. The sample comprises 510 students (55% girls, 45% boys), aged 14-16. Results: The Scale shows high reliability and internal consistency, with Cronbach's alpha and omega both of 0.84 and optimal goodness of fit (GFI =0.992, CFI =0.992, NNFI =0.987, RMSEA [95% CI] = 0.032 (0.0101-0.0378) and RMCR = 0.0404). Gender is an invariant variable. Discussion or Conclusion: The GADA Scale is a reliable instrument with an overarching comprehensive perspective on gender and feminism that addresses issues relevant in adolescence. The Scale has educational applications.
