ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Delaware State University
The aim of this study is to understand how African American students perceive the impact of diversity on their education's success. The research explored African American student's perspective of having a diverse faculty, administrative staff, and peers in higher education and how this influences their chances of completing their program of study and having a successful career. The diversity of the United States should be reflected on its higher education campuses as this fosters a more enriched learning environment and develops a better culture of inclusivity and comradery, thereby promoting the opportunity for a successful student population, not only African Americans. The history of the United States is an important part of the foundation that resulted in the challenges African American experience as they were not privileged to equal or equitably treatment as members of society. A charge was needed for there to be any hope for meaningful upward mobility of the race, and so Historically Black Colleges and Universities were established as a means to provide higher education to this ethnic group (Johnson, 2020). The study examines how African American students perceive higher education institutions, having a representative academic, administrative staff, and student population, and how such diversity impacts the outlook of their academic and professional careers. It is believed that racial and ethnic gaps between college students and faculty exist across all disciplines in most academic institutions, and there needs to be more racial and ethical diversity and student enrollment in institutions of higher learning (Schak, 2016). The development of a diverse environment seems to be an essential aspect of any higher educational institution to effectively compete, not only on the state level but globally as well.
