ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive study was to learn how Muslim international students acculturating to campus life described how on-campus support services influenced their acculturation process in a university located in the Southwestern United States. The conceptual framework for this study was Berry's Model of Acculturation. There were four research questions asking how Muslim international students studying at an American university described the influence of on-campus support services based on the four acculturation strategies of Berry's Model of Acculturation: integration, assimilation, separation, and marginalization? The participants in this study were 14 Muslim international students studying at a U.S. college campus in the State of Texas. Data sources were semi-structured interviews and a focus group. The data were analyzed using open and axial coding and codes were created and then grouped, linked, and analyzed to identify themes/patterns and relationships which resulted in the following themes: Theme 1.1: Campus support for Muslim international students, Theme 1.2: Muslim international student challenges, Theme 1.3: Acculturation strategies adopted by Muslim international students, Theme 1.4: Muslim international students' perception of the U.S. culture, Theme 1.5: Advice to other Muslim international students, Theme 1.6:. Results showed that Muslim international students rely on campus resources and staff's influence on their acculturation. This support can be afforded to students through education, raising awareness, effective and intentional campus services, and programming conducive to meeting Muslim international students' needs.
