This article describes an action research project conducted by the first author that examined the influence of class meetings on student-to-student as well as student-to-teacher relationships. Her action research project addressed the following overarching question: What influence do class meetings have on relationships in a first-grade classroom? More specifically, this study sought to answer these sub-questions: (1) What influence will class meetings have on student-to-student relationships?; and (2) What influence will class meetings have on student-to-teacher relationships? The study was conducted over a six-week period during the spring semester, in her first-grade classroom in a large rural school district in Central Texas. Findings from this study helped address the two research questions related to the impact of class meetings on relationships in her first-grade classroom. With regard to the first question related to student-to-student relationships, she found the meetings helped promote a greater sense of community within her classroom. Regarding the second question related to student-to-teacher relationships, she found that her students were more respectful to her as their teacher as well as to other adults on the campus. This inquiry project helped her understand how significant relationships are in building a positive classroom community. (Contains 2 figures.)
