Yes, but Can They Solve Right-Angled Triangles?

Over the years the technology behind displaying the image of the unit circle has changed, but the defining features remain constant. The key question for the author as a teacher is this: are the relationships embodied in the image simple, memorable and rich enough to be grasped by any KS3 student at his school? It needs to be simple enough to allow all students in the class to participate in the lesson and make progress. It needs to be durable enough for students to reconstruct the picture themselves when they are stuck. It needs to be rich enough (a meta-image?) to aid the understanding of trigonometry beyond right-angled triangles. In this article, the author tries to suggest that the image of the unit circle and its associated relationships are accessible to all students. It can lead to language-rich lessons where students are practising their English skills as well as exploring a mathematical idea, which can be extended in lots of directions, including the solution of right-angled triangles.
