This study of the British manpower situation was based on investigations in the field (interviews and discussions with British government and university officials) during the period September 1969-July 1970. Early achievement in the textile industry training program focused on operative training, followed by emphasis on management development. Recruitment efforts have been increased. As Assessment of Training scheme provides standards, assistance, and recognition for individual companies in maintaining adequate training programs. (MW)

The training adviser's role is changing from trainer to problem analyst. Some of the problems being dealt with include: (1) the school to industry transition, (2) new training methods for the 16 to 18 year old entry worker, (3) foreign language training, (4) safety programs, and (5) tire-fitter training. Seeing its role as one of stimulating, guiding, and coordinating training activities rather than providing central training facilities, three programs have been developed by the Air Transport and Travel Industry Training Board: (1) an occupational program, (2) a company program, and (3) an industry program.
