Dealing with Child Sexual Assault and Abuse: A Resource and Planning Guide. Revised. Bulletin No. 6509.
Davis, I. Lorraine; And Others
Sexual abuse of children in the United States is far more pervasive than most educators realize, with studies estimating up to 500,000 annual occurrences. This revised resource and planning guide for Wisconsin schools should help districts deal with sexual abuse on school premises and suspicion of this behavior off campus. While the guide cannot cover every conceivable situation, it provides resources for inservice training, along with suggestions for curricula, prevention programs, and interviewing techniques. Part 1 defines the problem and provides samples of current Wisconsin prevention and intervention programs. Part 2 outlines recommendations for developing a school board policy and a model policy. The third and fourth parts describe sexual abuse indicators and appropriate response systems for various age groups. The fifth section outlines techniques for interviewing abused children and their parents, while the sixth section focuses on community networking and linkages, including names and addresses of local, regional, and national resources. Seven appendices list prevention projects in Wisconsin school districts, curriculum resources, national prevention programs, training resources, a bibliography with over 50 references, films and filmstrips, and legal references for Wisconsin.
