This report is one of a series of background studies especially prepared for the Conference on Future Structures of Post-Secondary Education held in Paris in June 1973. Following a discussion of the stimuli for change and responses to this stimuli in American higher education, a detailed description of the Extended University of the University of California (UC) is presented. Emphasis is placed on strategic options, the program, the research, a survey of UC undergraduates, and the need for alternatives. Appendixes include the survey methodology and a brief description of various alternative approaches in higher education. (MJM)
