One Voice: Music and Stories in the Classroom.
Britsch, Barbara M.; Dennison-Tansey, Amy
This book offers teachers a practical and theoretical classroom guide to the many ways music and stories may be explored, both independently and in tandem, to give students a better understanding and appreciation of each art form separately and of their power together. The crucial aspect of activities described in the book is original productions by students, empowering students to experience the imaginative possibilities of music and storytelling. The publication is divided into two parts. Part I, chapters 1 through 4, covers a general response to stories and music, the basic elements and organization and structure of stories and music, and activities stressing imagination exploring these art forms. Each chapter begins with an introduction to the chapter's theme, followed by a series of story activities generally arranged by age and complexity. Next are musical activities in the same arrangement. These chapters each culminate with a group of collaborative activities that integrate stories and music. Part II, chapters 5 and 6, contains instructions on making instruments and books in the classroom. The appendixes provide extensive bibliographies on storytelling, picture books, music, making instruments, and making books; a discography; a list of sources for instruments, books, and recordings; and a glossary of literary elements, literary terms, and music terms.
