Issues in Asian and Pacific American Education.
Tsuchida, Nobuya, Ed.
The six papers collected in this report were originally presented at a conference on Asian and Pacific education held in 1984. The papers deal with such topics as: the relationship between educational attainment and economic status; training programs designed for teachers and staff working with limited English speaking Asian students; effective mathematics curriculum and instruction for immigrant students; innovative strategies for second language learning; traditional pedagogical philosophy prejudicial to minority education; and teaching and reading Asian American literature not as nonfictional data but as literature. Paper titles (and their authors) are: (1) "The Educational Status of Asian Americans: An Update from the 1980 Census" (Stephen H. Kan and William T. Liu); (2)"Assessment of Limited English Proficient Children with Special Needs" (Vicki Siegel and Linda Halog); (3) "Johnny Can Add, But What Else?" (Sau-Lim Tsang); (4) "English Standard Schools: A Policy Analysis: (Amy Agbayani and David Takeuchi); (5) "Adult Learning Experience Journals: An Aid to Successful Teaching of a Second Language" (Teresita V. Ramos); and (6) "First Generations in Asian American Literature: As Viewed in Some Second Generation Works" (Stephen H. Sumida). (KH)
