Impressions of health educators in the specialty fields of community, patient, and school health are presented concerning the scope of their profession, commonalities and differences in their professional preparation, and recommendations for directions to follow in developing a systematic and coordinated competency assurance program. This information, gathered in a l978 workshop, is presented according to the following outline: (l) introduction background information, workshop format, fundamentals of a credentialing concept; (2) health education, state of the art, parameters of the profession presentation, conclusions, and background statements; (3) commonalities and differences in the functions of health educators presentation, conclusion, and background statements; (4) commonalities and differences in the preparation of health educators presentation, conclusions, and background statements; (5) overviewers' impressions on general progress and direction of the workshop deliberations; (6) workshop recommendations consensus of the group in relation to preparation and practice of the total field, regardless of practice setting or specialty focus; and (7) participant list. An appendix presents five "directional" and one "boundary" question, the answers to which indicate the primary determinants of the content of health educator professional preparation. (MJB)
