Three Views of Extended Teacher Education Programs.
Byrnes, Lawrence W.; And Others
This document offers three papers that were commissioned by the Executive Committee of the Minnesota Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (MACTE) for presentation at the organization's April 10, 1987 meeting. The challenge to each author (one representing the Minnesota State University System, one the University of Minnesota system, and one the Private Colleges in Minnesota) was to prepare a formal paper discussing the issue of extended teacher education programs. They were also asked to present the perspectives of the institutions they represent in MACTE. Each author took a singularly different approach to the subject but, when taken together, the views demonstrate a common belief in the efforts of today's educators, an openness to new ideas and approaches, a healthy skepticism of suggestions for reform, and a strong commitment to quality instruction for all citizens. The three papers are: (1) "Extending Teacher Education Programs: The Context within Which We Operate" (Lawrence W. Byrnes); (2) "Responsible Change in Teacher Preparation" (Craig Kissock); and (3) "Keeping Our Options Open: Extended Teacher Education in Minnesota" (Stephen Preskill). (JD)
