AFL-CIO Training and Education Conference Proceedings (Baltimore, Maryland, December 3-5, 1986).
Perlman, Laura; Kane, Matt
In its ongoing study of changes in the situation of workers and unions, the AFL-CIO Executive Council's Committee on the Evolution of Work determined that information on job training and jobs is a top priority for today's workers. The AFL-CIO Training and Education Conference was planned in an effort to respond to this need. The conference brought together some 250 union representatives who are involved in carrying out labor's commitment to worker training and education. More than 30 unions from the building trades, industry, and the public and service sectors were represented. At the general sessions, union and federation leaders and experts from universities, the U.S. Department of Labor, and national organizations with job and training concerns discussed a broad range of education and training issues. A total of 24 workshops were held (including 6 on negotiating for effective training and 6 on training for the unemployed). The principal conclusion of the conference was the importance of negotiating contract language that addresses the education and training needs of union members. Another central conclusion was the prime importance of learning in the workplace. (This report includes summaries of each of the speakers' reports and the 24 conference workshops.) (MN)
