The Economic Development of West Virginia through Education: Symposium Proceedings and Recommendations (White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, August 6-7, 1986).
West Virginia Roundtable Inc.; Academy for Educational Development, Inc., New York, NY.
West Virginia's leaders--elected officials, business leaders, administrators of benevolence funding--attended the symposium held by the Education Task Force of West Virginia. Recommendations resulting from the symposium were: (1) to urge and support plans that focus on the individual student as the object of all reform efforts; (2) to support programs that develop a more cost effective education system; (3) to encourage teacher development at pre-service and in-service levels across the state; (4) to endorse and support the implementation of the West Virginia Board of Education's "1990 Targets for Public Education"; and (5) to support the efforts of the West Virginia Education Fund to establish and develop greater cooperation between the community, particularly the business community, and the public schools. This proceedings contains a summary, recommendations, and transcripts of speeches and discussions. Titles and speakers include: "Investing in Our Children: Business and the Public Schools" (O. Butler); "A Nation Prepared: Teachers for the 21st Century" (L. Branscomb): "What a State Can Do To Improve Education" (W. Godwin); "Keynote Speech" (Arch A. Moore, Jr., Governor of West Virginia); "Recommendations for No-Cost Reforms" (a special question-response session); "Current State Efforts To Improve Education" (D. Doyle); "The Press and Education Reform" (E. Fiske); and "Relationship of the Public Schools to Business" (R. Schwartz). The appendices include a list of participants and a copy of the program. (KS)
