Including Travel in Your Academic Plans
Thompson, David
National Middle School Association (NJ3), Middle Ground v8 n 2 p31-32 Oct 2004
As teachers and principals prepare students to pass mandated academic tests, they should not overlook the role educational travel can play in motivating students to achieve. Travel brings curriculum to life and teaches lessons that students will remember--and need--throughout their lives. In this article, the author describes educational travel opportunities available to students at Armstrong Middle School in Flint, Michigan, and discusses the benefits to students and to the school that come from linking trips to the science and social studies curricula. He also discusses several keys to running a successful educational travel program at the middle level, focusing on choosing an appropriate destination for the students' age and curriculum and the practical considerations of traveling with groups of students.
