Developing Student Leaders: Exemplary School Activity Programs.
Leatt, Desmond J.
OSSC Bulletin, v31 n4 Dec 1987
This bulletin reports on five high schools that have effective, comprehensive student leadership programs. First, it reviews ways in which student councils can enrich students' lives. In addition to having a positive effect on students' success in school and later life, involvement in student activity programs influences the way that students perceive their ability to change the conditions that affect them. Next, similarities and differences in the organization and operation of outstanding student governance programs in five Oregon high schools are described: Lake Oswego High School, West Linn High School, Sprague High School, Grants Pass High School, and Klamath Union High School. Chapter 3 addresses the objectives and content of student leadership classes, while chapter 4 examines components of leadership training workshops. The conclusion lists elements common to exemplary student leadership programs. (Author/TE)
