The World According to Women.
Eddy, David, Ed.; Garb, Gill, Ed.
World Education, Inc. Reports, n27 Fall 1987
This issue of Reports Magazine focuses on the challenges that women face and their efforts to continue the struggle for a wider recognition in development and all other spheres of life. "Feminist Issues in Development" (Peggy Antrobus) discusses how feminist analyses offer critiques of conventional approaches to development that highlight the structures and systems that oppress all people, especially poor women. The individual struggle is captured in "Nancy's Story" (Nancy Robinson), which describes a woman's awakening to her own strengths and her life's new sense of purpose in Appalachia. "Superwoman in the Third World" (Elayne Clift, Merle Goldberg) is a brief comment on the burden that development has put on women. Based on anthropological research carried out over two years in Kenya, "Buying Power?" (Martin Walsh), an analysis of women's groups, shows how women's views of their situation can be very different from that of development planners. A report focuses on how prostitution in the Philippines is tied to global militarization and national debt. Three books are reviewed: "Doing a Feasibility Study,""Rural Women and State Policy: Feminist Perspectives on Latin American Development," and "Hopeful Openings." In a field report, Jaya Gajanayake describes how village women in Sri Lanka learned to trust their own judgment and work together to overcome traditional barriers to change. (YLB)
