Mentorship Programs for Aspiring and New School Administrators.
Pence, L. Jean
OSSC Bulletin, v32 n7 Mar 1989
Anticipating a 50 percent turnover of principals in the next few years, school districts and university training programs are exploring mentoring as one way to help aspiring and beginning principals learn complex administrative tasks and ease into their roles. This monograph highlights some formal administrator mentorship programs in Oregon. Chapter 1 provides an overview of formal and informal mentorships and discusses how they might benefit participants being trained and socialized into school organizations. Chapter 2 presents some examples of formal programs instituted by school districts--notably David Douglas, Tigard, North Clackamas, and West Linn. Chapter 3 focuses on formal mentorship programs sponsored by the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators. The final chapter offers suggestions about structuring formal mentorships to ensure that participants receive optimal benefit from the relationship. Successful programs (1) establish a plan; (2) develop goals and objectives; (3) identify mentors and proteges; (4) conduct an orientation for these groups; (5) provide resources (staff and compensation); and (6) develop a feedback/monitoring system. Included are a bibliography of 37 references and a list of 28 interviews. (MLH)
