This issue, the second in a series on how public education will evolve in the new century, focuses on the suburbs, highlighting two suburban communities in the Atlanta, Georgia, region. The first part, "Remodeling Suburbia," explains that in newer suburbs, enrollment is booming, and schools struggle to keep up with growth and changes in student populations. In older suburbs, many of which have already seen dramatic demographic changes, enrollments may become more international as immigrants bypass central cities to settle in nearby communities. The second part, "Paying for Prosperity," discusses the lure of good schools in the newer suburbs, the educational expectations of parents in the newer suburbs, and the fact that these areas are ripe for demographic change. The third part,"Beyond Black and White," presents a history of demographic shifts in Clarkston High School in the Atlanta suburb of DeKalb County since racial integration, explaining that immigration is changing the face of the county's schools and examining language barriers in this suburb's schools.
