The Development of a Test to Measure the Ability of Students in Teacher Education to Identify Comprehension Activities in Terms of Categories of Comprehension Skills.
Dixon, Nancy Powell
The test developed in this study was a 60 item multiple-choice test. Content validity was established by the use of The Barrett Taxonomy of Cognitive and Affective Dimensions of Reading Comprehension as a basis for the test construction. Items were selected to represent subtypes in each of the five major areas of the taxonomy. Construct validity was established by administering the test to a group of graduate students enrolled in reading education courses during the fall semester of 1974. One group received instruction in reading comprehension, and the other group had no such instruction. A comparison of the mean scores of both groups was made using the Student's t-test. Also, the subject's scores on each of the major areas were correlated with the total score on the test. From the findings, it was concluded that a valid and reliable test was constructed to measure the ability of students in teacher education to identify comprehension activities in terms of categories of comprehension skills.
