A Model for Inservice Teacher Training in the Caribbean: Curriculum Development for Teaching the Educationally Handicapped in the Regular Classroom.
Lynch-Richards, Esla V.
This dissertation describes the development of an inservice teacher training model geared to teaching specific methods and techniques for working with the educationally handicapped. The document presents, in its review of the literature, an analysis of educational trends in the West Indies, and then pays specific attention to the development of education in Trinidad and Tobago, the site of the field test. It examines the reasons why and how education first emerged in the area, developments in the twentieth century and recent innovations. It also describes the content of the teacher training curriculum as found in Trinidad and Tobago and the educational background of primary school teachers. It demonstrates why the need for inservice teacher training exists. A number of appendices which provide the original and final curriculum, the pre- and post-evaluation materials, and a recommended reading list for teachers are included. (Author/AM)
