A Study of Third-Grade Academic Achievement Differences between Disadvantaged Students with Head Start Experiences and No Head Start Experiences.
Smith, Alice
This study examined differences between the academic achievement of third-grade students who had had Head Start experiences prior to entering public schools and the achievement of similar students who had not had Head Start experiences. Seven third-grade classes enrolled in public schools, as well as in a Follow Through program, participated in the study. Results from a standardized achievement test indicated that, in general, there is no significant difference in the academic achievement of the two groups of students, in the third grade or in either of the two preceding years. Analyses are reported for subgroups based on the race and sex of the students, as well as for the total group. (Author/AA)
