A Study of the Graduates of the Master of Arts Program in Adult Education at the University of Minnesota: Roles, Educative Functions, and Assessment of the Program.

A study was conducted to identify the employment history and educative functions of the graduates of the Master of Arts (M.A.) in adult education of the University of Minnesota and their assessment of the M.A. program. A self-administered mailed questionnaire was used to survey the 61 graduates of the program between 1979 and 1986; 54 graduates provided usable information. The study found that 45 of the graduates work in agencies and jobs involved with providing adult education, and one was a doctoral student in adult education. Nineteen of the graduates work in educational institutions, 14 work in agencies that use adult education as a means to other ends, 11 work in agencies created to educate adults, 1 works in a community agency, 9 were not working in adult education, and 7 did not respond to the survey. Judging from the job titles, 22 of the graduates work in administrative jobs, 13 in program development, 7 in instructional positions, and 3 in counseling. Most of the graduates belong to professional societies, some serving as officers, and many have published papers or made presentations for national audiences. Many of the graduates reported community involvement. The educative functions of program development, administration, instruction, and counseling were those most often performed by the graduates. They were satisfied in many ways with the program, but made suggestions for improvement. The study has implications for the curriculum, the student services, the administration of the M.A. program, and for further research.
